We are a mixed choir of all ages made up of around 40-50 singers. We meet weekly on Wednesday evenings from 8pm to 10pm at Batchley Community Centre, Cherry Tree Walk, Redditch, Worcestershire.
We perform our own fundraising concerts during the year and in addition we perform concerts by invitation from other organisations, churches, village halls, charities, etc., who wish to raise their own funds. We are also available to sing for after-dinner entertainment and at weddings.
We perform music of many styles – show songs, opera choruses, spirituals, folk songs, traditional songs, ballads, classic pop – so there is something to please everyone. Concerts can be tailored to suit the audience.
If you love singing and would like to attend a few of our rehearsals with a view to joining our choir, please come along and you will be made very welcome. You can get in touch via our “Contact Us” details. Anyone wishing to book the choir for a performance or event can also contact us via email, telephone or social media.
Musical Director – Jack Brookes
Jack graduated in 2017 from the Birmingham Conservatoire having studied the Harpsichord, and has always had a passion for music. He was educated at St Francis of Assisi CTC and studied A-level music at Aldridge school. Last summer, Jack played for the Conservatoire’s Baroque summer operas; a great first step towards a career in the Baroque world.
Jack started playing the piano at the age of 7, and the flute at the age of 10. He has been a member of the West Midlands Barbershop Harmony Chorus (Anvil Chorus) and is currently a member of the St Chad’s Cathedral choir, with which he travelled to Rome to perform in the Pantheon and sing mass in St Peter’s Basilica (Vatican City). Jack is also the pianist and assistant director for the Icknield Male Voice Choir in Birmingham
Jack has worked as the pianist in Marco Pierre White’s restaurant on the top floor of the Cube in Birmingham, acquired a scholarship as the pianist for the St Chad’s Choral Outreach Programme, and St Chad’s Cathedral Junior Choir and has also been a member of the ‘From the Top’ Theatre Company and was musical director for their 2012 pantomime.
Outside music, Jack took up archery at the age of 13, swiftly becoming the county champion in the under 14, under 16, under 18 and adult categories. He has competed for the West Midlands and was part of the winning team in the Midland inter-county match three years ago.
Accompanist – Chris Walk
Chris grew up in Birmingham and learnt to play the piano and organ at the Birmingham Oratory from the age of 11. He was a member of St Philip’s Grammar School Choir for eight years during the 70’s, some of the most memorable occasions being recordings for the BBC, concert tours in France, singing in the Vatican for Pope Paul VI, concerts at St Peter’s and the Oratory in Rome, plus an impromptu performance in the Vatican catacombs.
After leaving school he joined a dance band in his spare time, playing banjelele and bass guitar and covering regular events throughout the length and breadth of the Midlands. This was followed by stints with various local bands, covering a variety of styles including rock, pop, blues, soul, country and Irish music.
Of late Chris has been involved in accompanying the Birmingham Icknield Male Voice Choir for the past 8 years, highlights include concerts at Symphony Hall and Birmingham Town Hall for the St Georges Day concerts, and Worcester Cathedral for the annual EAMVC concert. He is also called upon occasionally to be guest accompanist for the Half Circle Singers based in Streetly, whose recent achievements include Benjamin Britten’s “St Nicholas”. Chris also finds time to be a regular church organist, having played at the local parish church for over 40 years now.
